How many of you know Geoffrey Hinton? If you had enrolled to Coursera courses for Neural Networks, there is a possibility that you were taught by this great professor.
Yeah! Right. He is often referred to as “The Godfather of Deep Learning”. In 2018, he was awarded the Turing Award –considered to be the “Nobel Prize of Computing”. According to Wikipedia, he joined Google after his company “DNNresearch Inc.” was acquired by the tech giant. However, in May 2023, he resigned so that he could spread the information about the risks in AI. Please note, that this has nothing to do in specific with Google. Its the impact of AI as a whole that he wants to warn about.
Recently, Professor Geoffrey Everest Hinton had told BBC Newsnight that he is worried about AI taking jobs. Also, use of AI in military could lead to “extinction-level” threats. The inequality of rich getting richer with quick productivity and more money, and the people losing jobs because of AI would have nothing is a significant concern.
Imagine a Terminator-like scenario where the robots take over in the future. It’s fine as long as it is helping us, but if it enters military, it could be another nuclear bomb. Are we creating a villain among us? Villains, more accurately. They would take decisions on their owns and before you realize it, they could strike war. Probably, this is what even Hinton is worried about. Wrong use of AI in military? It could be catastrophic. These things might seem to be a fiction today but it could become a reality if AIs are not regulated.
In the race to become the first and most powerful in the developments of AI, let’s hope the technology leaders seriously consider the safety and risks – not just for now, but for the sake of peaceful future too.
